1. Paraphrasing là gì?
Paraphrasing (viết lại câu) là việc hình thành câu văn mới sử dụng ngôn từ của chính mình và vẫn giữ nguyên đại ý của câu gốc.
Câu gốc: Reading books is necessary for children’s development.
Câu viết lại: It is necessary for children to read books hoặc Reading books plays an important part in the development of children.
Mặc dù 3 câu trên sử dụng các cấu trúc ngữ pháp và từ vựng khác nhau, chúng đều truyền đạt thông điệp tương tự nhau.
Luyện tập kỹ thuật viết lại câu trong IELTS chính là luyện tập sử dụng ngôn ngữ một cách linh hoạt và làm cho văn phong trở nên đa dạng và thú vị. Sau chúng ta đã biết cách tạo lập và phát triển câu văn, chúng ta cần phải học cách áp dụng chủ động những kiến thức ngữ pháp đó vào việc diễn đạt ý tưởng linh hoạt. Với những người có kỹ năng viết lại câu tốt, họ sẽ có thể gia tăng tư duy ngôn ngữ và sự hoạt ngôn của bản thân cũng như đạt điểm số cao trong bài thi IELTS Writing.Cụ thể hơn, kỹ năng viết lại câu trong IELTS đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc cải thiện điểm số kỹ năng viết trong bài thi IELTS vì nó giúp người viết:
• Tránh lặp từ, lặp ý
• Thể hiện được năng lực diễn đạt tốt qua việc sử dụng từ vựng và ngữ pháp một cách linh hoạt
Đây là 2 yếu tố quan trọng trong các tiêu chí chấm điểm của bài thi. Tuy vậy, người học gặp rất nhiều khó khăn trong việc cải thiện kỹ thuật viết lại câu trong IELTS vì nó không chỉ đòi hỏi người viết có vốn từ tốt và còn cần có kiến thức chuyên sâu về ngữ pháp tiếng Anh. Chính vì vậy, Unit 7 sẽ tập trung vào các kỹ thuật viết lại câu trong IELTS Writing Task 2 và cung cấp các bài tập thực hành với các đề thi trong những năm gần đây.
2. Kỹ thuật viết lại câu
Có 3 bước trong việc viết lại một câu

| Bước 2 Thay một số từ trong câu gốc bằng những từ đồng nghĩa |
| Bước 3 Sử dụng 1 hoặc kết hợp các thủ thuật sau • Đổi cấu trúc câu |
Lưu ý về các thủ thuật
2.1 Đổi cấu trúc câu
Cách quen thuộc nhất để đổi cấu trúc câu đó là đổi từ cấu trúc chủ động sang bị động hoặc ngược lại.
Employers should provide their employees with better salary packages. (chủ động)
➔ Employees should be provided with better salary packages by their employers. (bị động)
Hoặc đôi khi chúng ta có thể đảo ngược tân ngữ lên thành chủ ngữ của câu mới và dùng từ vựng khác so với câu gốc
➔ Employees should receive better salary packages from their employers. (provide →receive).

2.2 Đổi dạng từ trong câu
Trong hầu hết các trường hợp, chúng ta sẽ đổi động từ trong câu thành danh từ hoặc ngược lại. Khi đổi dạng từ thì cấu trúc câu cũng sẽ thay đổi, chúng ta cần kiểm tra từ điển Collocation để dùng chính xác các cặp từ đi với nhau trong trường hợp sử dụng thủ thuật này.
The government should support local businesses.
Support (v) → support (n)
➔ The government should provide support for local businesses. (to provide support for somebody: cho ai sự giúp đỡ).
2.3 Sử dụng chủ ngữ giả (it & there)
Trong những câu sử dụng cấu trúc “should”, “need”, “must” v…v…, chúng ta có thể sử dụng chủ ngữ giả “it” để viết lại câu.
People need to protect the environment.
➔ It is necessary for people to protect the environment.
Một số trường hợp có thể dùng chủ ngữ giả “there” để viết lại câu.
Smoking should be restricted in public places.
➔ There should be restriction on smoking in public places.
Hoặc
Fast food should be taxed heavily.
➔ There should be heavy taxes on fast food.
2.4 Thêm thành phần bổ nghĩa / giải thích nghĩa
Trong nhiều trường hợp, chúng ta có thể viết lại câu bằng cách đưa ra phần bổ nghĩa / giải thích nghĩa (mệnh đề quan hệ) cho một thành phần của câu gốc.
The government should support local businesses.
Local businesses = businesses that operate locally.
➔ The government should support businesses that operate locally.
Hoặc
Learning through mistakes is key to a person’s development.
To be key to something = có vai trò then chốt đối với cái gì đó (to play a vital role in something) = là yếu tố quan trọng nhất đối với cái gì đó (to be an extremely important factor in something)
➔ Learning through mistakes plays a vital role in a person’s development.
➔ Learning through mistake is an extremely important factor in a person’s development.
Áp dụng
Many people say that exercise is key to health while others believe that a balanced diet is more important.
Vế câu đầu tiên: Many people say that exercise is key to health.
• Many people say that ➔ It is usually said that (chủ động → bị động)
• Exercise: Hãy thử đưa ra một định nghĩa nếu không tìm đươc từ đồng nghĩa của từ:
Physical training or physical activities. (giải thích nghĩa) hoặc đổi sang dạng động từ
Exercising (đổi dạng từ: danh từ → động từ).
• Key to: Có 2 cách để thay đổi cụm từ này. Đổi dạng từ: “adj to noun” để thành “the key to” hoặc có thể giải thích nghĩa của cụm từ này “the most important/vital factor/element”. (giải thích nghĩa)
• Health: Có thể giữ nguyên từ này hoặc đổi dạng danh từ sang tính từ healthy và thêm 1 danh từ như là body hoặc life. (giải thích nghĩa)
Vế đầu có thể được viết lại như sau:
➔ It is usually said that physical training is the key to a healthy life.
➔ Physical training is usually said to be the most vital element in a healthy life.
Vế câu thứ 2: others believe that a balanced diet is more important.
• Có thể sử dụng chủ ngữ giả (it) để viết lại phần này. (chủ ngữ giả)
➔It is more necessary to have a balanced diet.
• A balanced diet: Đưa ra định nghĩa: a proper eating habit (giải thích nghĩa)
➔ It is more necessary to have a proper eating habit.
