The table illustrates the variation in prices of a cup of coffee in six different Australian cities during the four-year period from 2010 to 2014.
Overall, it is apparent that during the given time, Sydney leads with the highest price for a single cup of coffee while Canberra charges the lowest. Additionally, Melbourne has the most significant change in the price throughout the studied period.
In 2010, people in Sydney enjoyed a cup of coffee at $2.9, which was almost twice as expensive as that of Canberra at only $1.5 per cup. Melbourne’s coffee cost the second-highest with a price of $2.4, followed closely by Brisbane at $2.25. Amongst the six cities, only two of which, namely Adelaide and Canberra had their coffee priced under $2, at $1.87 and $1.5, respectively
After 4 years, the ranking remained the same with Sydney still leading at $3.17 and Canberra charging the least at $1.7 per coffee cup. However, there was a major increase in the coffee price of Melbourne with a considerable 20.8%, reaching $2.9 per cup. The same trend could be witnessed in Sydney’s price, able it not as considerable, the charge went up 13.2%. The remaining cities exhibited a relatively similar price change of around 6-7% with the exception of Brisbane with no change in price.
